General Dentistry

General Dentistry focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions affecting the teeth, gums, and supporting structures of the face and jaw. This broad scope of care helps maintain lifelong oral health and address common dental concerns before they become more serious.

As primary oral health care providers, general dentists manage routine dental needs, including exams, cleanings, fillings, and restorative treatments. When a patient requires advanced or highly specialized care, the general dentist coordinates a referral to the appropriate dental specialist for further evaluation and treatment.

The LLUSD General Dentistry Student Clinic

Since 1953, Loma Linda University School of Dentistry has prepared future dentists under the guiding motto, “Service is our calling.” The School’s student clinic was established to give dental students hands‑on clinical training, and in 1959, dental hygiene students joined the program, expanding the clinic’s ability to serve the community.

Today, most dental conditions are treated at the General Dentistry Student Clinic, including many complex cases that benefit from the expertise of our faculty specialists who support and guide student clinicians.

Before treating patients, all School of Dentistry students complete several years of undergraduate coursework and at least one year of dental school education. Throughout patient care, highly trained and experienced faculty dentists supervise and mentor students to ensure high‑quality, evidence‑based treatment.
